About the Convention
Celebrating their 30th year, U-Con takes place every fall in Ann Arbor, Michigan at the stunning Eagle Crest resort. All events happen in the Marriott, where the rooms have fantastic views of the resort's golf course and the nearby lake. The convention is non-profit and entirely run by a staff of dedicated volunteers who curate a massive library of nearly 250 board games in addition to playing host to every type of gaming imaginable. Last year, U-Con saw 1,005 attendees, who spent the weekend LARPing, board gaming, tabletop roleplaying, miniature gaming, and this year looks to be spectacular as well with special guests Eloy Lasanta, Ken Hite, and Chris Spivey!
For players, preregistration begins around September 12th, and is only $25 for the entire weekend during preregistration, or $35 at the door! Once registration opens, you'll need to pay a nominal fee for tickets to most events ahead of time. If you'd like to keep your options open, you can also purchase generic tickets or a 'Play Games All Weekend' ribbon for $20 that lets you into any game with space!
GM With ConTessa
NOTE: If you've already submitted a game to U-Con, and you'd like to switch it to a ConTessa game, contact U-Con through their website and request your game be added to the ConTessa track.
ConTessa GMs get a few extra perks for GMing with us, including:
A 'thank you' gift bag from ConTessa, containing a variety of gifts from us and game publishers that donate content.
Access to our Safer Space, even when you're not running a game. We try to keep a table or two free for 'open gaming'. Come by anytime to take a load off.
Access to our board game library. While much smaller than U-Con's, ours still has some good games, which are available for use by any of our GMs, and their friends, within the confines of our room.
Access to our emergency supplies bin, which contains pens, pencils, scrap paper, paper pads, hand sanitizer, and other items you might find yourself in need of last-minute.
Large, dry erase game mats with a square grid on one side, and a hex grid on the other as well as extra markers and erasers for GMs to use while running their games.
A variety of pride flags for use as table covers.
The pleasure of knowing you're inspiring others through representation. Our GMs are superheroes who actively make gaming better by serving as positive representatives.
We accept all types of events as ConTessa events. The only requirement is that the event is led by at least one marginalized person (people of color, disabled, LGBTQ+, non-binary, and women). Most events will be held in the room U-Con provides us, however this year we'll also be placing events in other rooms to accommodate tables that may be better suited to card, miniature, and board games.
Leave Your Board Game at Home!
U-Con has an ENORMOUS board game library, and they’d be happy to lend you one you can run as a ConTessa event! To secure a game for your event, head to the U-Con contact page, and let the board game librarian know which game you’d like to reserve for what time. Then, follow the same steps below!
To Get a Free GM Badge
U-Con will give out free badges to anyone who runs at least 6 hours of games. Run 16 hours of games, and you can get a GM badge AND a 'Play Games All Weekend' badge. Not all of those hours need to be run as ConTessa games (though we'd love it if they were!)
To Submit Your Event
Once you're done and logged in, click 'Submit Events' in the menu to the left.
From there, you'll be asked to fill out a form describing your event. In the middle, you'll see a 'Comments for event coordinator.'. Add 'ConTessa' to this box to let the event coordinator know yours is a ConTessa event that should be added to the ConTessa track. Events can be in multiple tracks at the same time, so if you wanted yours to be in both ConTessa and OSR, you'd just add 'ConTessa, OSR'.
Here's a sample below of what an entire RPG entry might look like:
Once you're satisfied, submit your event, and U-Con's event coordinators will take care of the rest!
Before submitting, I'd also recommend taking screenshots of your form so you'll have a digital record of what you entered for your own reference.
If you have any questions, Tweet to us at @ConTessaOnline, or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org!
U-Con will regularly be providing us with names and email addresses for everyone running ConTessa games, but we won't be getting the information in real-time . We'll be in touch with you all in early October for additional coordination and an official welcome!
