As you enter a room, the card is flipped over. Now you must deal with NPCs, blow tech locks, collect data and deal with other operatives looking to do the same. The thief that outsmarts their counterparts by holding the most data and making it out of the facility before security shows up wins and gets to brag about it at the pub later.
